Movie is an excellent combination of present and past. In the Dark Age, Connor Macleod´s mother was burned as a witch, and Connor kills Jacob Kell´s father, the preacher. Connor also stabs Jacob Kell himself, making him immortal. After that, Jacob seeks revenge. In centuries he kills 661 other immortals (plus 5 immortals at the "Last Dinner", which makes number 666) and becomes the strongest immortal alive.
Duncan MacLeod also stabs his girlfriend Kate, making her immortal, to stay with her for the eternity. But Kate also turns into revenger, and cooperates with Jacob. In present, Jacob kills Connor´s friend Rachel. Connor checks himself into Sanctuary, where immortals can go to escape the "Game", also ensuring that the "Prize" never falls into wrong hands.
But Jacob Kell and his group find the Sanctuary, and after bitter fight with monks, they kill everyone inside, except Connor, who is now forced into open battle. He lets himself get killed by Duncan, who takes his power and defeats Jacob. Movie ends as "happy love story", re-uniting Duncan and Kate.
